Start Here – Introduction to the Course > Introductions > PH556x: Connecting Science and Improvement

  • The course blends life sciences and humanities including history, art, literature, music, and cinema.
  • I realize that many of you may not know much about IHI’s mission and work either.
  • It is translated improvement science in to practical, easy to understand, methods and tools that can be applied anywhere in every day work.
  • This MOOC is just a small piece of IHI’s effort to spread improvement knowledge to students and health professionals around the world.
  • Most importantly to change the conversation about what’s possible and improving health and health care.
  • Now just for example, you may have heard about- or participated in- the IHI open school, and the numbers here really just incredible to me.
  • Or maybe you’ve heard of the IHI triple aim to improve outcomes and patient experience.
  • IHI also hosts annual meetings in the US, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
  • Which attracts thousands of improvers who want to learn new improvement methods, and share their innovations, their results, and their enthusiasm.
  • This MOOC is the culmination of the marriage of science and improvement that’s characterize my career, both at Harvard and IHI.
  • I benefited greatly from my colleagues at Harvard who brought their own research methods to the QI field, and I hope they benefited from the disciplined approach to improvement we use that IHI.
  • Academics and quality improvers working together in what I really think is a unique partnership, to help you learn the basics of scientific, rigorous QI. And I hope you understand why I’m sitting here talking to you about scientific QI. I’m thrilled to have a chance to bring together what I’ve learned in a really long career of research, teaching, and quality improvement, and to share my experience with you.
